3 Tips For Getting Your Shower Door Looking Good As New Again

by Gaëtan Meunier

If it's been a while since you've cleaned your shower, you likely have a bit of a buildup of soap scum going on. Your shower door in particular may be something you are concerned about, as this might be the first thing any house guest will notice upon entering your bathroom. Installing shower doors instead of curtain liners in your bathrooms can make the room feel more high-end, but that's a feeling that will go right down the drain if the soap scum starts to take over. Here are 3 things you can do to help get your shower door restored to its former glory and then hopefully keep it that way in the future.

Vinegar and Baking Soda

If your looking for an inexpensive home remedy to help you tackle your soap scum problem, check the pantry. Vinegar and baking soda are both adept at cutting away grease. Create a solution with heated distilled vinegar and a dish detergent that advertises its grease-cutting potential. Add a dab of baking soda if you like. Scrub the glass shower door with a non-scratch sponge. A solution of vinegar, baking soda and soap should likely leave your door sparkling clean.

After Shower Sponge Or Squeegee

If you want to ensure that your glass shower door stays clean in the future, the most important time to take action is in the minutes following a shower. After you are done drying off, simply take a sponge or squeegee and gently wipe the door of any residue you find. You don't have to stand there and scrub it, just make sure the door is mostly dry before you leave the bathroom and that will go a long way towards preventing future problems.

Preventative Spray

If you really want to kick your scum prevention into the next gear, you can create your own daily shower spray that will help keep scum at bay. One cup of water, a half cup of vinegar, perhaps a little soap and just a dab of your favorite scented oil will do the trick. Spray down the shower door from a distance after you've sponged or squeegeed the door following the shower. Let this do it yourself mixture air dry and you will have given your shower door even more protection from soap scum.

A glass shower door can help make your bathroom look elegant, but that look goes right out the window if the door becomes covered in soap scum. Luckily, you can solve this problem with a variety of substances you already have around the house. Vinegar and baking soda can cut through almost anything. Then, once the door is clean, use a sponge or squeegee and self-concocted shower spray to keep things feeling and looking clean.
