2 Tips To Help Prevent Your Windshield Damage From Spreading

by Gaëtan Meunier

It is always best to have you windshield replaced or repaired immediately if it becomes chipped or cracked. Unfortunately, this is not always possible. In some cases, you may find that you simply do not have the time or the money necessary to complete these repairs for a few days or weeks after the damage occurs. In these situations, it is important for you to take steps to prevent the damage from spreading. The tips below can help you to accomplish this task.

Tip #1: Quickly Seal Moisture Out Using Waterproof Tape

Moisture is your enemy when trying to prevent damage to your windshield from spreading. If moisture is allowed to settle between the panes of glass in you windshield, this moisture can freeze or boil as the temperature of the glass changes. When this happens, the increased pressure caused by the moisture can quickly result in your windshield cracking further or even shattering.

Before taking steps to prevent future moisture problems, you will first need to ensure that all existing moisture has been removed from the glass so that none is accidentally locked inside. Next, cut a piece of waterproof tape that is several inches longer than the damage to your windshield. Round the corners of the tape and then center the tape over the crack or chip in your glass. This will allow you to create a waterproof seal that is capable of keeping all moisture out until you can have the glass repaired.

Tip #2: Look For Shaded Places To Park

Extreme heat or cold can cause your windshield to expand or contract. While this is a natural process that occurs even when your windshield is not damaged, these changes in your windshield can result in spreading damage due to the weakened state of the glass.

In order to prevent your windshield from being exposed to extreme temperatures, it is always best to look for shaded parking spots, especially if you plan on parking your vehicle for an extended period of time. Just remember, the position of the sun will change throughout the day. Consequently, an area that has ample shade right now may not have any shade in a few hours. Therefore, if you plan on leaving your vehicle parked throughout the entire day, it is usually best to look for a sheltered parking lot or garage where you can park your vehicle.

In the event that you cannot find any shelter or shade, placing a car cover or heavy duty tarp over your vehicle can help to protect the glass from the extreme heat or cold.
