Glass Shower Enclosure Care

by Gaëtan Meunier

A glass shower enclosure can open up a small bathroom by creating an unbroken line of sight. These types of enclosures also provide simple, clean lines that can complement almost any type of bathroom design. Unfortunately, soap scum and grime also shows clearly on these doors, so it's important that you know the right way to maintain them. The following guide can help you keep the enclosure in top condition.

Invest in a Squeegee

A squeegee is the best tool available for maintaining your glass enclosure. Take a few minutes after every shower to remove the water from the glass with the squeegee and you will likely never need worry about scum buildup. You can find shower squeegees in a range of colors, including metallic finishes, so that they match your bathroom décor. It's better to use a squeegee than a towel, since the rough surface of a towel can scratch the glass. You should also replace your squeegee promptly if the rubber strip becomes damaged.

Clean Deeply

Your shower will still need a weekly deep cleaning, even if you squeegee everyday. This ensures that no haze develops from remaining soap or mineral deposits that the squeegee misses. You can use a commercial shower glass cleaner. Alternatively, create your own shower door cleaner by combining a half cup each of peroxide and rubbing alcohol with a teaspoon of liquid dish soap. Mix in a tablespoon of a dishwasher rinse aid if you want a truly streak-free shine. Add enough water to the mix to equal 32 ounces. Store the cleaner in a spray bottle, labeled with the contents. To clean the doors, spray it on the glass and wipe it off with a lint-free microfiber cloth. This mixture can cut through soap scum without damaging the glass.

Minimize Water Deposits

Mineral deposits, usually caused by calcium or lime in the water, are the main enemy of glass. These deposits can actually etch the glass if you don't clean them off regularly. Installing a water softener in the home can help prevent mineral deposits and etching. If you are still having trouble or if your shower enclosure is already etched, you will need to contact a glass company, such as Aladdin's Glass & Screen Products Inc, about replacing the enclosure. Perhaps consider a frosted enclosure, since this won't show deposits or etching as much as clear glass. A glass company may even be able to frost the glass on your existing enclosure so you won't have to replace the entire unit.
